Real talk. I’ve been pretty open about my weight loss journey, but I think it’s important to share the high points and the low points.
A lot of people believe that if they lose weight, it will solve their problems and they will feel so much better about themselves. While this is true in the sense that they are healthier, and can wear and do things that they couldn’t before, and they overall feel more confident, there is another side of weight loss that often goes un-talked about.
Eventually the luster of the bulk weight loss fades, and many of us are left with extra, sagging skin, and stretch marks. And while I try to embrace it as part of my journey, sometimes (especially lately) it really gets me down. It’s a reminder of the trauma I put my body through when I uncontrollably gained weight due to emotional eating. It’s frustrating that I’ve lost so much weight, and yet I still don’t feel comfortable in a bikini.
Obviously I don’t regret losing the weight, but part of this process is forgiving myself for the mistakes I made in the past. One day I hope to have this skin removed, but in the mean time, I’m just going to continue to work at loving myself as I am. I’m sure I’m not alone. We all find flaws in ourselves. But remember that this is an ever growing, ever changing journey, and as long as you don’t give up, you are headed in the right direction. The amount of weight I’ve lost is equivalent to the overall weight of a grown woman. That is a hell of an accomplishment, and it’s something to be proud of. I can’t let my insecurities deter me from continuing to fight and build on what I have worked so hard for.
