A lot of people have asked me lately why/how I started losing weight. So, here’s my origin story:
About 6 months after the picture on the left was taken my doctor told me I was boarder line pre-diabetic. I’ve been obese my whole life, my father and uncle both had Type 2 Diabetes before having gastric bypass surgery, and I felt completely defeated. I felt doomed to my fate.
I talked a lot about joining a gym or yoga studio but I couldn’t seem to find the time or the money or the will to go. Then, my work started a corporate wellness initiative with great incentives like a discounted monthly rate and a gift card to the gym if I went at least 16 times a month. A💡went off, I decided 29 years of being obese was enough. It’s like a switch was flipped inside me. I wanted to live a long, healthy, and happy life with my partner and best friends. The time was now. RIGHT NOW.
I started going to the gym 5-7 days a week and learning to eat/make/love real food. There were a lot of bumps in the road. Months of plateaus. Constant questioning of my nutritional choices. Lots of failed burpees and tears on the yoga mat. I’m learning and trying new things all along the way. And I’m only ½ way through the weight loss portion of my story.
So, here’s what’s worked for me: Find an exercise that you like and start there! And then try new things. Do your cardio. Do your strength training. Stretch or go to yoga. Set insane goals that are NOT related to a number on the scale. Try new things all the time. Read, “Salt Sugar Fat” by Moss and “The Dorito Effect” by Schatzker. Those two books completely changed my life. Read all you can on nutrition. Eat all of the vegetables. Foods that come in boxes should make up
